IPTV and Home Entertainment

What is IPTV?

IPTV is television delivered through service operators’ lines using the Internet Protocol.  Whereas traditionally television has been delivered simply through broadcast (transmission from one point to all connected receivers), IPTV allows for transmission via unicast (single receiver) or multicast (multiple but not all receivers) methods.  Additionally, IPTV allows for bi-directional communication, enabling service providers to generate much more customized content for their subscribers.

Much of the internet backbone in terms of high bandwidth fiber has been laid in countries like India and the US – the real bottleneck in Internet speeds is in the so-called “last mile” to homes. As last mile bandwidths increase over the next few years, it will be possible to deliver high definition audio and video content over the Internet to IPTV enabled homes. A single method of delivery and source for a consumer's favorite movies and songs is extremely convenient, and more and more consumers will gravitate toward this model. This will also mean that a person will use a single termination point in their home for both video and audio – and will expect high quality equipment to receive and render an outstanding experience.

Why IPTV?

There are several main drivers that are enabling the emergence of IPTV:

Pressure on telephone companies to seek non-voice revenue sources.  Before the rise of the internet, telephone companies were able to hold monopolies over telephone lines and charge high prices for voice calls.  However, the emergence of broadband and wireless substitutes such as Vonage and other voice over IP (VOIP) services are threatening their primary revenue source.  Telephone companies that provide internet services are also being hurt by increasing demand for high-bandwidths at a low cost, forcing them to seek alternate sources of revenue.

Opportunity to capitalize on a large pay-TV market. Telephone companies are looking toget their share of profits from this lucrative business, especially with their already-extensive nationwide wire coverage.  There are also several new potential revenue streams in advertisement and other interactivity through the two-way capabilities of IPTV.

Maturing technology.  Compression technology maturation (H.264, VC1) as well as bandwidth capability increases are making it feasible to offer compelling IPTV services.

Next generation IPTV architecture is now needed to create the most attractive product for the consumer.  Customers are looking for that next generation IPTV experience bringing:

  • End user quality of experience (smooth, high-resolution, lag-free)
  • Content attractiveness (programming variety, interactivity, shopping, etc)
  • Complexity of installation and operation (set-top box and home equipment performance)
  • Price competitiveness (best value for least price)

Video is not the only thing that can be delivered in this manner – hi quality audio on demand, with additional benefits such as song lyrics can be as well.  Entertainment being delivered over the Internet will change lifestyles, and we at Cinebels are excited to be at the forefront of that change, providing immersive video and audio solutions for a memorable home entertainment experience, one you will never forget!
